Top Ten Biggest Selling Diva Singles (Ever) Of The UK

The OfficialCharts.com have released their list of the top ten biggest selling female singles of the United Kingdom. Having compiled the official UK Charts for just under 60 years, no one else is better placed to give us a reliable run down, figures included, of the impressive accolade.

Take a look at the list below:
  1. MADONNA: Into The Groove (17.8m)

  2. RIHANNA: We Found Love (11.4m)

  3. KYLIE MINOGUE :Can't Get You Out Of My Head (10.2m)

  4. WHITNEY HOUSTON: I Will Always Love You (8.5m)

  5. LADY GAGA: Poker Face (7.329m)

  6. BRITNEY SPEARS:Baby One More Time (7.324m)

  7. BEYONCE:If I Were A Boy (6.9m)

  8. CELINE DION:My Heart Will Go On (6.7m)

  9. MARIAH CAREY:All I want For Christmas (6.62m)

  10. OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN: You're The One That I Want(6.61m)

There are a few shocks on the list. Rihanna at number 2 with last years monster track We Found Love is crazy considering how it amassed such huge numbers in such a short space of time. Also a surprise, for me, is Beyonce at number 7 with the soppy, If I were A Boy. I don't even recall that being particularly massive, especially compared to Crazy In Love and Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).

Put perhaps most astonishingly is not one singer from the United Kingdom has made the list. No Annie Lennox, no Sade, no Adele!

Any surprises, or thoughts on the list, Devotees?

    1. Thoughts? A Lot! But conclusion...I remain firm in my belief humanity is getting more and more "stupid". ;D

      That is one saddening list.

    2. Into the Groove is one of the few dance songs that will truly FORCE you to dance. That song is immense.

      ReplyDelete
    3. Hmmmmm no Adele is REALLY surprising what with the massive success of Rolling in the Deep and Someone Like You...wow. Anyway, yeah, I'm surprised to see If I Were a Boy on there as well. I didn't know it was that even that big. This whole list really shocks me. Anyway, wonder what it's like for the US.

    4. Looks like the Gaga stans on this blog found this comment already ;)
I can see why Gaga is such a success with them. Those must the most easily manipulated fans around.

      ReplyDelete
    5. You are so dumb ass ( almost as Gaga's stans ).... i usually don't use words like this on people that i don't know personally. Right now i am not fighting for Gaga or her stans, i accept your opinions but the way you express them is almost as bad as the way that Gaga's stans do. Actually i took some time to think about what your are claiming about Gaga on this blog and i found out that you are likely correct but i also found out that i don't care what is the truth behind Gaga cuz her message ,either it is fake or not, helped me so much and her songs gave me more than songs of the others. Don't take this as i want to start a fight, i am just saying what is on my mind. You know i am big Gaga fan but i have my own mind, sometimes i am really ashamed by the way that other LMs fight for her but would not you react like that when someone is telling things you don't like on your idol ?
I still hope that Gaga is honest person no matter how logical your statements are. Maybe we the time will reveal the truth.
Do you really think that numbers are everything ? I don't care if she sold 7 millions or 1, it is not what makes you a better artist. All these fan wars are so pointless, it is sad.

      ReplyDelete
    6. ROFL Dude, you clearly ARE a Gaga Stan.
I made a joke about sales numbers because I knew Gaga stans would get upset and at the very least vote it down. I then had a laugh at them, within a day, indeed fulfilling my expectations. You are going one step further and decided to provide yet more proof for my views on Gaga stans.

If you had ever read comments by me where Gaga was not mentioned, you would know I am just about the last person here who gives a flying fick about sales numbers. In fact, you could have known that even if you had read and understood what I said in comments you would find with your Gaga search engine.
That was in fact the crux of the joke...the fact that Gaga stans WILL care Madonna outsold Gaga and how silly I find that kind of thinking ;)

And really? Starting a comment of by calling someone "dumb ass'" and criticizing the way they express themselves? But you are not desiring to start a fight?

Well, glad you had the chance to get this all off your chest."_
I am afraid I cannot fail to notice you do actually. in the process, prove yet again my views on Gaga stans still does not need adjusting.

And FYI no, I don't tend to respond like Gaga ( or other artists) stans if someone says something I don't like about people I like. That's because I am not a sheep looking to be lead. Not by religious or political figures and certainly not by singers.

I tend to dismiss such people as poor dears who don't know a good thing when they hear it .

    7. I must say I too am surprised at "If I Were A Boy" being on this list, also Olivia Newton John. Mostly because I hated Grease (please don't jump on me people) and never thought that single was all that successful.

I am not surprised with the rest of the entries however, I just wish my Kelly was up there. Maybe this year though MC will sell yet more of AIWFC and overtake a couple up the list hehe

      ReplyDelete
    8. i cant stand how popular rihanna is over here in the uk...so many pregnant 12 yr old girls singing her songs on the bus everyday.....oh dear

      ReplyDelete
    9. I know, she does not seem to have much in the way of decency. A couple of friends of mine were saying they went to see her live and she was simulating certain sexual acts (very explicitly) whilst very young children were at the concert, now one could argue the parents should not have taken them to see her but Rihanna and her company should also have an obligation in regards to protecting such young people from what can only be described as unacceptable conduct. That being said "We Found Love" is still a pants song...

      ReplyDelete
    10. I didn't hate Grease but I agree with you Stuey, that song IS a surprise. So much so that it is the one which most leads me to think the list is probably a load of crock. Most likely paid for by Sony. ;D
I mean, 60 years of UK charts and we have to believe those were the best sold female singles?

      ReplyDelete
    11. I suspect this also, maybe some of the entries are correct but it does nothing to dispel my suspicious mind!

Totally agree with your last statement there, at least we can take solace in the fact that the real talent is out there its just (most of the time) never marketed and pushed as much as certain females on this list ie Rihanna, Beyonce & Gaga...

      ReplyDelete
    12. True, but I was also thinking of the British females who have been pushed in the media and been successful. Like DD mentions not just todays Adele but Annie Lennox and indeed Sade and Sandi Shaw.

And how about this one? Can't believe that didn't sell at least as well as Newton John's single

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhpZfltbnAQ

According to wiki it was a hit 3 times in the UK?

      ReplyDelete
    13. Wow! I was thinking about that song the other day and I got frustrated when it went out my head and I could not remember it lol! It's a classic.

True about Annie, Sade and Sandi! It is kind of sad really. Also I did look at wiki in regards to madonna and it stated she sold only 860,000 copies. Although that sourcing is probably questionable too.

The main issue though with these artists above is even although they have been pushed into the limelight they have never used that one thing that seems to sell so prolifically, sex. Any references to the subject matter they did put out there was incredibly subtle in comparison to Rihanna, Madonna and Gaga, again VERY sad lol

At least good old Celine is in there, although I have heard that song far too many times too :D

      ReplyDelete
    14. And further indication this list is indeed a big fat lie...according to the Wikipedia article on "You're The One That I Want"..it sold WORLDWIDE 6.525 million.

In the UK it, in fact, according to BPI, sold 1.95 million

      ReplyDelete
    15. They might be counting digital sales, too. And Des'ree's peak occurred at a time before it digital sales caught on. But that song was huge!

      ReplyDelete
    16. Different times Stuey, different times. ;)
I didn't chec the wiki entry about Madonna's song but I just posted a comment here about what Wiki says re the Newton John song. And you can see in the footnotes , usually, what the source of the info is and therefor how reliable. The info on You're the One That I Want came from BPI for instance. I'd call that a fairly reliable source?

      ReplyDelete
    17. Yeh the BPI should be reliable, every day is a school day indeed huh?

I find it strange though that the official UK charts company does not give you totalled sales figures, how lazy of them!!

      ReplyDelete
    18. Turns out these are actually the worldwide best selling singles by female singers ( And I suspect even that is strictly speaking not correct. Likely there is some female in India who outsold many of these tunes in India alone. Or maybe some singer in China LOL)

      ReplyDelete
    19. But they DID, combined numbers worldwide. ;)

      ReplyDelete
    20. And Kylie's single according to Wiki

      "United Kingdom (BPI) Platinum 1,087,000"

In other words, on a UK list that song should in fact be below Newton John's effort

      ReplyDelete
    21. Well i am not pissed because Madonna sold twice as Gaga. I don't hate Madonna. I think that she is great artist, i love some of her songs and performances and i consider Like a Prayer to be one of the best songs i have ever heard. I don't really care about numbers. Now when i got what is your goal it made me smile :-). People like you are triggers of these "Stan wars". Haters like you comment on youtube videos or blogs like this every single day with intention to piss off someone and when someone reacts negatively on your post you are like: "You are stupid sheep blah blah, i am the one with the truth". This is pathetic !
I hate some so called artists but i don't comment on their vids how stupid are they. If it brings you pleasure to piss off someone than there is something wrong. The only thing that pisses my off is HATRED and that is sadly coming from both sides. I just wish that all haters and fans would realize how stupid and pointless these wars are. Music is about personal taste, if you say that Gaga music is bad that is only your opinion. None of us here is in position to judge quality of music. You may say: "That song is shit" but some one else may say: "That song saved my life". Music is like food. Not everything tastes good for you but the others may love it.

      HATRED is the thorn.

      ReplyDelete
    22. You are a legend, Opie! I like your conclusion on humanity a lot :)
However I'm not surprised the top of the list is made of singles produced within last 10 years. To understand you just need to answer the question: who is buying pop music? It's obvious - youngsters.
Back in 70's or 80's young people were relatively poorer than nowadays. Average price for vinyl SP was 3$ in 70's (I checked that out on internet). But that wasn't cheap, especially when average teenager's wallet was considerably thinner.
Now digital file with a single song costs under $1. Low price, better availability and much more money to spend in youngsters' pockets. These are main factors why the chart above looks that way (in my opinion of course).
Teenagers has become the most important marketing target for corporate business since beginning of 21st century. Advertising campaigns aimed at youngsters costed approximately $ 100 million in 1990. In 2000 costs rose to $ 2 billion. That is done deliberately.
Teenagers culture is roughly the same all over the world. Trends and tastes got homogeneous and it is the great opportunity for globalized industry to sell the same products everywhere. They take advantage on that and try to increase unification at the same time.
Years ago we had different subcultures (different national cultures as well) so this particular market niche was divided, harder to understand and less predictable. Now all that's gone. Madonna vs Gaga Stans. This conflict seems to me absolutely artificial to boost sales. Where the hell is a difference between them (and between mentioned artists)?
I've just read great book on that issues: "Consumed: How Markets Corrupt Children, Infantilize Adults, and Swallow Citizens Whole" by Benjamin Barber. It is more frightening than good thriller;)

      ReplyDelete
    23. Shite! Why I am not able to limit my comments to 4-5 sentences? I write feckin' tirades instead :#
Got to think about political career;)))

      ReplyDelete
    24. I have no idea to whom you are directing this but it clearly isn't me.

Obviously you have never read my comments on this blog or if you did ( as you earlier claimed) you did not understand a single word.

I am not a Madonna fan and I never talk about Gaga anywhere else but this blog and my points of criticism on both Gaga and her dimwitted stans ( two different subjects btw) should be very clear.
I sure put enough effort in explaining them. ;D
And you once again in these two comments demonstrated how Gaga stans are pretty dimwitted. Only supporting both my view on such folks and the reason for my view.

Not going to even bother with correcting the many inaccurate and/or dim statements you made here.

Just going to end with...I absolutely believe you when you say Like A Prayer ( which I do like) is one of the best songs you ever heard. THAT goes to show I am correct in saying Gaga stans have had limited access to music or simply poor taste.

      ReplyDelete
    25. LOL I am hardly in the position to suggest "why" you do that T. ;D I know I do it because I love words and feel the need to get my point across as clearly as possible.

      ReplyDelete
    26. Depressingly true as I think your analyses is T, I think it has already become clear that this list is a list of global hit singles. Not UK hit singles. It therefor makes your point brilliantly but says nothing about which females sang the best selling singles in Britain as it claims to do.

      ReplyDelete
    27. You're right about the lists in different countries. There are local artist you can find only in particular countries. But on the other hand you can see musical trends hitting countries like tsunami. When Britpop was at its peak you could find dozens local "clones" of Oasis or Blur in each country. Now we have "dance-pop-with-the-hint-of-80's" period. Surely that's global brands strategy as you said.
Yes, I noticed list you've posted. Looks more... friendly indeed. Thanks for Blondie link. I almost forgot they had existed (shame on me). Jaysus, Debbie Harry used to look soooo...;)

      ReplyDelete
    28. I start to think it has something to do with my nationality;) To clarify I offer a link. Well, not exactly politically correct but... there's something in it;)))

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CMEzPLD4Q0

      ReplyDelete
    29. Yes. I do agree with your general theory. Especially since the invention of the internet such trends tend to spread even easier, quicker and wider.
And in the light of all this and with humanity getting more stupid, the preying grounds for global corporations PR are ripe.
But Like I said before, there IS also a growing trend away from all this as more and more of the non stupid are realizing exactly how much they are being lead by the nose. We have to keep our eyes on that trend if we want to hang on to some hope for human kind. ;D

      ReplyDelete
    30. Wait, are you hater ? don't try to say that you are not.
I have not read every single comment you made max. 20 and i am not gonna read more cuz it would take at least year to read it all + get your point. I need to say sorry for expressing my opinions inaccurately, i am aware of what i could have explained better or a bit differently. I like much more artists than Gaga or Madonna for example Depeche Mode, U2, 30 Seconds To Mars, Lana Del Rey, Natalia Kills or even Bruce Springsteen, i did not say that i am not stan, i am if that means to appreciate someone and like his/her creations + trying to vindicate him/her. I think i am different than most of Gaga stans. I am looking forward to how you will challenge my statements here. If i may, what is your age ?

      ReplyDelete
    31. No. Someone who appreciates an artist and his/her music is called a fan or admirer.

A Stan is an obsessive fan who wastes his time responding to any negative comment he can find regarding a specific artist.

Whether you also like other music is really beside the point. However if that is true yet all you ever comment on here are posts about Gaga....well, that just proves you are indeed a Gaga Stan.

The fact that in everything you said so far there is a strong indication that the only comments of mine you have read are those connected to Gaga...again, goes to prove you are a Gaga Stan.

My age for instance you could have had some indication of had you read any comments by me other than on ...Gaga.

      ReplyDelete
    32. LOL Come to think of it..Polish dudes I have met do like to talk.
But the revolution thing and not taking shit of your government...I would associate that more with the Greeks. ;)

      ReplyDelete
    33. And i must admit that you are one of two haters i have ever responded to ( i don't care if you believe me or not, or i actually do cuz i wanted to prove that i am not like others but my insufficient skill in speech just will not convince you. Wish we would know each other better so that i could explain myself better to you ). I did not search deliberately comments including Gaga ( i came on this site cuz i wanted to know more about her voice ), i noticed that she is being mentioned on this site pretty often and i was curious what do people think about her. I spent about 2 hours of my entire life arguing with haters, the rest i spent admiring her art and doing meaningful things. Does it make me stan if i have responded to only two haters ? Now i regret it cuz it is only waste of time and energy.
When i said it would take year i meant that there is so much comments by you not that i can't get your message ( maybe i should have written it better ), i am a little bit hmm lazy so i did not take much time to think about all you stated. I need to say that your opinions are definitely more intelligent and globaly more convincing than most of comments by Gaga stans out here.
From your definition of stan i found out that i am not a one, believe or not. Omfg i respond few times on someone and suddenly i am stan !
You can't condemn someone you don't know to be automatically stan just for responding on your clear provocation. Please do not continue this conversation, it is a bit exhausting. I am sorry that some things are the way they are. At least you managed to change my limited view on her but still "love" her. Thanks for this little conversation.

      ReplyDelete
    34. ROFL And I must admit you surely are special...in being one of the dimmest Gaga Stans I have met here.
You first respond to the mildest of provocations....a very clear joke. With insults while claiming to not desiring to fight.

Too dim to know better than to start arguments in a language you clearly can neither express yourself sufficiently nor can comprehend sufficiently.

I gotta wonder, with such poor comprehension, how exactly did Gaga's songs "help" you? Certainly you seem to have written potential victim all over you, the way you try to get my sympathy and recognition of how "special" a Gaga stan you are.

Too dim to understand that if you don't want a conversation to continue you should simply stop replying.

And you are a stan because you are an obsessive fan dude.
Only a stan would respond in the first place to that joke. Only a stan will say he doesn't care he is being lead by the nose by a liar and still claim to admire that liar.
A stan or a major doormat. But seeing as we are talking a "little monster" who calls himself "noOne" I am guessing...both.

You think I "condemn" you for replying a few times? Guess again ! I "condemn" you for what you display in those comments and for who it is you admire to this extent.
And yes, I CAN have my opinion on you. How many times does that need to be explained?????
I know a lot of dim people think you can and should enforce thought but so far...no luck with that one baby! Only on...dim people.

      Oh yes, mong-ish.

    42. I am thinking of renaming myself Sandy. She too was so sweet at one time and then became quite terrible. ;D

      ReplyDelete
    43. Yes, the moral often comes in letters too small to read after 45. ;)
What DOES it say on her hand?

      ReplyDelete
    44. Btw T. I just realized I never answered your question as to the difference between Madonna and Gaga but that Madonna-Gaga war is not about the difference...it is about the enormous similarities claimed by many, denied by Gaga stans ( "Stans" because I am giving just regular fans, yes, I know that really is somewhat contradictory to my view on humanity ;D , the benefit of the doubt and think maybe they are more realistic )

      ReplyDelete
    45. I dug a bit deeper in my memory and look what I found! Quite decent pop song with extraordinary vocals. Just wondering if you remember this girl?

      ReplyDelete
    46. Well, that is kind of joke but whenever two Poles get to the arguments, there are always three points of view;))) We just love to be in opposition to pretty much anything.

      ReplyDelete
    47. I never expected the answer - it was purely rhetorical question.
I know exploiting so called "stan wars" is a sort of a sport for you. I've seen dozens of arguments you had been in on this site. Although I find such discussions futile as the other side can't exceed their limitations (mental, intellectual). They have one dimensional view on the issue.
In the matter of fact I'm not even interested in looking for answer who is copying whose career path, who is stealing from whom or who is bigger thief. The most interesting question in my opinion is why such "war" has begun and who is benefitting on it.

      ReplyDelete
    48. @facebook-100000090078915:disqus , Opie oh Opie, Have I ever told you how much I love you?

    49. @facebook-100000090078915:disqus , Opie oh Opie, Have I ever told you how much I love you?

      ReplyDelete
    50. I would call that a mis-characterization T. I am by no means "exploiting" that war. I am truly deeply annoyed at what Gaga is doing and the way people react to her shenanigans. I don't think there is any doubt as to who imitates who. I think you are interpreting that "war" incorrectly.
you seem to be buying into how Gaga Stans see it. As a fight over popularity between Madonna and Gaga.

It is not. Madonna is no contemporary of Gaga. Madonna is passe. Gaga is today's Madonna. Any wars benefiting PR people and consequently record companies, are those that could ensue between contemporaries only. For instance Gaga and Rhianna.

The answer as to "why" it begun? It began with, as you mentioned , glorification of youth culture and with that, the living in in the "hip now", glorification of ignorance and development of a general memory span of 5 minutes.
The "why" is because the product Gaga is one of the finest examples of exploiting the resulting state but those born before youth culture became the dominant culture ( or who didn't fall prey to that domination) are still around to see what's really going on.

      And pipe up.

As for whether discussions are futile when one of the sides can't exceed their limitations? That stance would have resulted in humanity still living in cages when you come to think of it.
Personally though, I do not have such discussions in the hopes of convincing the other. I have them in order to have the arguments for BOTH views out there and the "undecided" having access to both sides of the argument. :)

      ReplyDelete
    51. LOL That joke may be about Polish people in Poland but I think in the rest of the western world it is a joke about jews actually. Least I never heard it about Polish folk in my country or American culture. Always only about jews.
I always assumed it was based on the structure of the Talmud originally.

      ReplyDelete
    52. LOL Well you did twice now. I was however not aware of you harboring such feelings Ricky. But thanks... I guess. ;D

      ReplyDelete
    53. Correct me if I'm wrong, it looks as though you mean the singles itself sold the amount that's stated, but what it actually is, is that they sold that much amount of singles from the same artist COMBINED together, and that their highest selling single is the song stated. Not that the single itself sold that much.

      ReplyDelete
    54. Cheers Ricky. Now my joke looks foolish though as that is a fine print you actually can read better with age. ;)

      ReplyDelete
    55. It lagged, didn't mean to post it twice. Andddd, I didn't mean it wrongly. ;)

      ReplyDelete

Took me 2 minutes, though. xD

      ReplyDelete
    57. LOL And here was me thinking you were so overcome with love, you felt compelled to post it twice ( just kidding!)

anyway, wasn't sure how to take it ( could well understand a lot of folks throwing that one at me with sarcasm tbh ) so good thing you clarified. ;)

      ReplyDelete
    58. No Ricky, you are wrong in that. Those numbers are simply not the UK sales numbers but the world wide sales numbers of those particular singles.

      ReplyDelete
    59. Adding racism to his ignorance hardly comes a surprise, sadly...

      ReplyDelete
    60. LOL Not for nothing Stuey but the English are not a race.

      ReplyDelete
    63. Haha I forgot about that, I could totally go into a "Braveheart" moment....I will however do without the kilt, there is just some places I am not prepared to tolerate chafing ;)

      ReplyDelete

What really IS worn under them things???

      ReplyDelete
    65. Haha indeed they do, and apparently a true Scotsman wears nothing under his. I have only ever worn one once I think as a child (boxers were a must) lol

      ReplyDelete

    70. I thought you might like that one :D

    72. Oh no, it was sarcasm. I swear!
But I just meant that I love you because you always throw back something relevant when people throw something irrelevant at you when arguing. LOL

    73. @facebook-100000090078915:disqus I don't think my English is that bad >_>

"Madonna tops the chart with a COMBINED UK singles sales total of 17.8 million. The Queen Of Pop made her British chart debut in January, 1984 with Holiday, which peaked at Number 6. However it wasn’t until a year later that she scored her first Official Singles Chart Number 1 with Into the Groove, which incidentally, is her biggest ever selling track. To date, as a lead artist, Madonna has enjoyed 59 Top 10 hits (including 13 Number 1s)."

That was extracted from the site posted by DD.
I am so confused, is my English that bad now? D:

      ReplyDelete
    74. No it is not. Your comment was absolutely spot on. My bad! I thought you were responding to what DD was claiming in his article but I now realize you were pointing out the mistake( or really bad phrasing) DD made in his interpretation of the article.

I only now clicked on the link and the original article indeed gives the numbers of combined sales of all the singles sold and then adds the best selling single for each individual artists career but without any numbers on how much that actual single sold. My apologies Ricky!

      ReplyDelete
    75. LOL I don't think I mentioned sales numbers on that particular song. Since indeed the worldwide numbers on the ones I did check seem to be correct I assume so is that number. But you can check for yourself on Wikipedia. As far as I am concerned, aside from being happy Dolly made all that money, a 100 would be too much when it comes to Whitney's version. ;D

      ReplyDelete
    76. It's okay! It's not your fault, people make mistakes all the time. :)
Just glad my English isn't that bad... My first language sin't exactly English. LOL.

      ReplyDelete
    77. Yes, I understood that from the rest of the comment. :)

      ReplyDelete
    78. It isn't mine either. But the mistake is all mine I feel, I really ought to have done my research and right away should have clicked on the link to the original article.

      ReplyDelete
    79. You think? Not that it matters much to me. This is the internet and whether his is a sweet nature or not is nothing to me. All he has on here are his words and they don't impress me much intellectually. A characteristic I personally value more than a sweet nature. ;)

      ReplyDelete
    80. S'okay. :) I still can't believe Rihanna that lame ass is No. 2 though.

      ReplyDelete
    81. LOL Let's not even go there. Jury still isn't out on which one of us hates her more. Stuey or I.

      ReplyDelete
    82. kkkkkkkkk

Forget about me, pal! What fo you want? U wanna date me? LOL

      ReplyDelete
    83. Is it just me or does anyone else think of a cackling hen when they see all those "k" s?

      ReplyDelete
    84. I don't exactly hate her, her songs are very very catchy, but people like her, I wouldn't call her to be "talented", so many other artists out there deserves what she has so much more than her. She just disgusts me a lot.

      ReplyDelete
    85. They should just create another name for the hurricane called Hurricane Opie, you deserve your own hurricane. ;)

      ReplyDelete
    86. I thought I was the only one who felt that way. Hurricane Opie makes Hurricane Sandy look like child's play.

      ReplyDelete
    87. I hope on the way she takes Justin Bieber and Rihanna. Maybe 1D too.

      ReplyDelete
    88. True Ricky! But unlike Sandy et al,mine would be a very discriminate hurricane. They might also have to name it something else than "hurricane" therefor. Maybe a Nordic storm ;D

      ReplyDelete
    89. I'd definitely take Rihanna, I'd leave Justin alone until he is a bit older. If he is then still persisting in the same behavior I will take him on my next round. No idea who 1D is but likely anyone who calls himself 1D would end up my victim. I will have to check him out

But bananas I would leave alone. Apparently they bruise way easier than I thought. LOL

      ReplyDelete
    90. Oh I do hate her. Mostly for her behavior though. The songs are likely not any crappier than a lot of songs by similar folk. I'm sure the record company assembled a team around her able enough to fool loads of members of "humanity".

      ReplyDelete
    91. Bananas are delicious! Unappreciated, but nutritious. And they seldom sour. In fact, I heard they get sweeter with each blow. LOL

We need to work on some new articles. I know DD has a lot to do. Maybe I can hustle something up. I still need to sort through the vocalists we already have posted here.

      ReplyDelete
    92. Ugh this list is filled with trash.
      Relevant (somewhat):
Two of my fav talented ladies just performed at the Royal Albert Hall for the Final Fantasy 25th anniversary. I wish the U.K would acknowledge them. *sigh*

      Crystal Kay
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHySNLq7AQk&feature=plcp

      Susan Calloway
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG2x5RLwqEY&feature=plcp

Also, don't know if you take requests, but I would love to see a vocal profile on Crystal Kay! ( I know you have a lot of pending vocal profiles though) She's a very underrated artist from Japan, and she's got a great voice imo.

      ReplyDelete
    93. You would know best. You seem to be the expert on bananas. I have little experience with them, the only one in my experience went sour rather than sweet.

Just wondering, are you one of the moderators or writers on this blog? Or is that more "technical writing" I shouldn't address? The way you make it sound like you are and real close to DD.

Anyway, he said he'd get to work on that Alison Krauss profile one of these days so perhaps that is on his way? I was also hoping for a review on the Dave Stewart-Alison Krauss duet. Or maybe one on the Kelly Clarkson at the CMA's performance of her new single? Personally I loved that one. Thought it was a great performance ticking all the boxes for me anyway. Nice song, excellent Live singing and clearly performed with joy of singing( and singing with Gill) rather than with joy of being adored by screaming teens.

      ReplyDelete
    94. No, I don't know DD at all. I just know better than to bug about articles because folks have lives to lead. Nor do I work for this blog in any capacity -- not a mod or tech writer or anything of the sort. Just a guy who likes music and learning about it. And bananas. Should make some darned banana bread soon actually. And let us put this misunderstanding aside, shall we? I'm no troll and I think we just communicate very differently. I'm the right foot, you the left.

I know Clarkson's discography better than that of Krauss so I'll have a look at the CMA show. In accordance with what you remarked, I usually enjoy Kelly because she sounds like she really enjoys performing. It makes her vocals very accessible and meaningful as a listener. There are people who know Krauss' work far, far better than I do, so I don't want to step on any toes! *winks at Stuey* They could probably do those reviews far more justice.

      ReplyDelete
    95. That's exactly what it is, you ass!

      ReplyDelete
    96. Thanks, was just wondering.

And yes, we do communicate differently. "technical writing" was your phrase and it seems I misunderstood how you meant that.

Obviously you are not a troll and I never thought nor suggested you are. But I do think where Ricky and I were joking, you were getting in a little dig. That's how it came across to me anyway. No doubt again those different ways of communicating getting in the way. :)
Again, if I bruised you I am sorry. To my best recollection I never attacked you personally. I in fact thought that we were getting along and joking well. Only sometimes differed in opinion on music and stuff. But I really was doing such differing with the utmost respect for you. Seems that hasn't come across very well. :(
And it was a disappointing surprise to hear you in fact took issue with some of my comments.

Same with my remarks about reviews. DD asks for requests, I put some in. For DD to review. Tbh I doubt he feels pressured by me. I sure hope he doesn't anyway. :)
The above comment were not requests for you to review them. Just thought I'd share the link so that readers could find the performance easily if they are interested.

And Stuey likes Alison stuff I shared with him but is hardly an expert. There are no Alison "experts" here but me. ;D
But Serendipity get's closest to "getting" her work because he has home turf advantage I suppose.

      ReplyDelete
    97. Sure. Hope that clears up things. I know we vary in our musical/rhetorical opinions at times. I suppose I got concerned once you got on my tail, because you stayed on me for a while. You don't "shake" easy. Started to feel something was awry. I see how I might be mistaken about how I perceived it all. Before you just got nitpcky which grated my nerves, but I lived with it since some people are very detail oriented and others very big picture. It's natural. We seemed to be misreading each other a lot. But with that bananas quip you punched back! Got me on my toes! LOL. I decided to bake bread with the bruised bananas though. I'm not much for argument or fighting unless the case is worthy. Saps too much energy usually and banana bread is too good to pass up. :P

As for digs, no. I was just playing about the hurricane. Hurricane Opie is pretty epic, you must admit! I'm not a guy who enjoys insults. Not my style. Joke, play, yes. Insult to purposely hurt someone, get one up and be smug...nah.

Thank you for sharing the Kelly link she did a splendid job on that song and it was very natural. No formal reviews, just my impression. I see you've been working on the others with Alison. Stuey was singing her praises last week so maybe you've been quite successful in spreading the joy around.

      ReplyDelete
    98. Well it is good to see you are aware and in fact mean to come across like a cackling hen H. :)

But there is no need for such name calling dude. Oh wait! Yes there is....your lack of verbal skill dictated that one. My bad, carry on as you were. :D

      ReplyDelete
    99. yes I WAS on your case, in that I like you and exchanging ideas with you. That sure dioes seem to have come across radically different then intended LOL

Because it came across so radically different, I will not touch on where I disagree with you on big picture v. details. ;D

I like to think generally I have strong opinions and express them strongly but they are just my opinions.

The banana quick I did try to turn back on you because I was insulted about the two black eyes quip tbh. You really are reading me very different if you would assume I would be harsh like that to any artist in person so to speak.

My opinions on these artists are put undiplomatically because I am pretty sure they are not reading these comments. I can assure you, though I would be honest, I would be a whole lot more diplomatic when addressing the person who actually put the effort in.:)

I am the one who basically made the joke when I suggested renaming myself after hurricane Sandy. Ricky just ran with that one a little further. So yeah, I am quite willing to admit that one to be "epic" :p

      ReplyDelete
    100. If that's the case, than yes this list is indeed incorrect. I know for a fact that Japanese singer Thelma Aoyama held a record for most digital downloads in Japan (8.7 million digital copies and that was Asia only I believe) until Japanese band Green Surpassed her. Also, previously the record was held by Japanese singer Utada Hikaru, who sold over 7.7 million digital copies of her single Flavor of Life. Even discounting Asian artists, I'm not sure why Adele isn't on this list. According to wikipedia, and countless other sites, in the U.S alone she sold over 7 million digital copies of Rolling in the Deep. This list is a croc of shit. The U.S has the largest music market, followed by Japan. There's no way in hell these songs have sold as many copies as this lists proclaims exclusively in the U.K.

      ReplyDelete
    101. Nvm, after clicking on the article and reading it thoroughly, it seems as though those are the total number of copies sold by that artist for all of their singles combined. The article really did phrase it poorly, possibly to make the stats seem more impressive than they actually are.

      ReplyDelete
    102. I see. I think that "harshness" is sort of what throws me since I try to be quite diplomatically about most things I post. You probably saw that in my comments on Denters. It wasn't about me liking her or her music (I'm no fan), more about appreciating she had worked on something. You are very direct and quite precise about what criticisms you do dish out so I think I eased away a bit from that. And I didn't know the black eyes comment even bothered you since you were so quick on the return. That was because I perceived you as cold, uncompromising and abrasive. I figured you'd not care much about anything I said. But seriously, seems like we misread the other and got all confused about what the other was trying to say. We are totally different communicators (inverted personalities would be my informal guess) so this confusion would be par for the course.

And I am glad to see you can 'fess up to being quite a meteorological force. ;-)

      ReplyDelete
    103. Yes it truly does amaze me you didn't get I like you. :)

Indeed we do seem to be opposites as I tend to express the negative opinion way stronger than the positive. I don't go out of my way to be mean but I don't fear rejection for being considered mean either. I know most people do.

But I do mind if someone thinks I was being mean to them when I intended the opposite.

Uncompromising? Don't know about that seeing as I hate pop music and pop divas in general yet here I am on this blog, being quite positive at times. That doesn't sound like the actions of an uncompromising individual do they?

Anyway, if you think I am a meteorological force, don't ever watch Fran Lebowitz. She is even more abrasive then I am. Though she is way wittier about it. She is my verbal hero and I can but content myself with coming up with a good line about once a year where she comes up with a couple in every interview at least.

    104. Understood. I see you are a unique character, OE. And Fran Lebowitz is something else...LOL. Whew!

      ReplyDelete
    105. I truly hope we cleared the air for real now. :)

I do like you, I enjoy your comments but I will respectfully disagree with you regularly no doubt. Especially since we are both individuals with clearly minds of our own.

      ReplyDelete
    106. Can't say I share your love for these two ladies but I might be able to go somewhat there regarding Susan Calloway.
Theseare two names I hadn't heard before so imo great post Mel. Always good to hear of non ( western) mainstream singers, you never know who you might come to love. :)

      ReplyDelete
    107. I do love you. Always loved a nice bit of chicken. I love you H. ,like my cats love mice. A deep and abiding love it is indeed. :)

      ReplyDelete
    108. Thanks, and I figured you would like Susan Calloway more than Crystal. She has a vocal tone similar to that of other artists that you have posted on here. I'm not all too Familiar with her solo work, I just know of her from her collaborations with The Distant World's orchestra. She often fills in for other ladies and performs the vocal pieces to the Final Fantasy series live. Although this particular theme song (Answers) was originally sang by her. Also, yes!!, you often have to step outside of the mainstream to find the real talented artists.

      ReplyDelete
    109. You love me. You love me. You love me. Maybe, sameday I shall ask you out. LOL!

    110. You really ARE a glutton for punishment aren't you.As if being humiliated here wasn't enough for you.

    111. Very impressed by Gaga considering her career is the youngest of all these women. Amazing! I never really knew how popular Gaga was in the UK until she was able to effortlessly sell over 100,000 tickets in the UK alone a few months back. They really love her.

      ReplyDelete
    112. We must not forget that payola and blocking indie products while over promoting nothing but garbage is partially responsible for this trend.

      ReplyDelete
    113. personally i wouldn't want to be compared to Madonna who has been lacking since day one. Madonna is a guilty pleasure novelty Gaga is clearly a lame copy neither one are that great though.

      ReplyDelete
    114. Why is the world obsessed with Madonna

      ReplyDelete
    115. You have to understand that when Madonna came out, times were much stricter than they are today. When Madonna first came into music she represented this sexually free and liberated woman, people wanted to be her and people hated her for what she was doing. Either way, people were talking about her. She challenged society's very strict view on women and it ended up paying off for her, she took a risk and it panned out extremely well.
