[Review] Leona Lewis : "Trouble"

Leona Lewis has released a new song from her upcoming third LP, Glassheart. And people, you can all relax, because the dance direction last single Collide was showcasing is nowhere to be found. Instead, new song Trouble is a dramatic, and building mid-tempo song that puts Leona Lewis firmly back in safer (musical) territory, though with an edgier attitude courtesy of the lyrics.

Fellow British Diva Emeli Sande was responsible for penning Trouble, and her influence can be heard strongly throughout the song. Not just lyrically, but musically: with the composition and structuring of the song seeming to mirror Sande's own breakthrough hit Heaven quite heavily. It's a choice that really only fails on Trouble's chorus; which contains too many distracting pauses in the vocal melody for this listeners taste.

Kelly Clarkson is one of five musicians- the others being Kid Rock, Travie McCoy, Ice Cube and Wiz Khalifa- been given the opportunity by Pepsi to write and record a song for their own favourite team. Kelly was apparently so excited with the honour of recording a song for the Dallas Cowboys, she penned the lyrics the same night she was offered the gig! Now that is a fan!

Is anybody checking for Brandy anymore? The reason I ask is because her posts seem to get the lowest views for this site; which is odd considering some (her fans) call her the "Vocal Bible". Anyway, for those still interested, the singer has released the video (finally) for single Put It Down [Review here].

I was wondering why it was taking so long for this video to drop; the single debuted at the start of May, and the video was filmed at the start of following month. However, having just watched this awkward affair, I bet the delay was due to a desperate editor/ director fervently trying  to stitch together a half decent showing from a bunch of bad takes.

Unsurprising-if you've noted the title- the single is a spunky break-up song, that sends out a very clear message to the ex involved: "it's over, Gurlfriend"...or rather "boyfriend"....so move on!

Vocal Pluses: The quality of Thornton's voice could easily be described as dynamic, robust and highly flexible. She has the ability to easily manipulate her instrument to fit the material in which she is singing, such as soft and gentle (most of PCD records, doing backing vocals) or more forceful and direct (Bulletproof, Hit the Ground Running and Sweet Vendetta to name but a few from P.O.Y.B.L)

Regarding the texture and quality of the voice one could say the lower extremities sound well supported but tired, slightly flat. The mid range and belting range, in particular, sound crystal clear, contain a incisive tone and feel more comfortable for Thornton to access than that of the lower. The voice from the bottom to the top sounds well connected, illustrated by Thornton's adept use of melisma throughout the entire range.

The head voice however is where she really shines. The tone is such to be powerful, expertly placed and far healthier sounding than the rest of the voice. She is able to access this part of the range from approx G5 right up to Eb6, retaining a full strong tone as well as a fantastic flexibility and fluidity that makes traversing this area easy and free.

Overall Melody is a technical singer who possesses a voice that is for the most part well placed, distinctive in its sound and very energetic.

Vocal Negatives:Criticisms have often been levelled at her for her over indulgence in melisma, which often detracts from the melody and nature of her material. This has caused some to accuse the singer of not always being in full control of her instrument. The tone of her voice can also be seen as overbearing, particularly in high belts where the voice takes on a stronger more slicing nature.
