[Watch] Mariah Carey Breaks Down During Live Performance Of "Looking In"

Definitely a fan favourite, Looking In was Mariah Carey's self-aware nod to the privileged life that she had found herself in during the 90's. Recorded for the Daydream album, the introspective lyrics were in stark contrast to the fairytale life many thought she led and highlighted not only the darker trappings of fame, but a Diva who appreciated the success she had.

Even up until now it contains some of Mariah's most honest and open lyrics, leading me to wonder why, as a writer, she never sang it live. However, if her performance of the song with the NY Philharmonic at the MLB All-Star Charity concert was anything to go by, it seems she never did so before because it was just too painful.

[Watch] Mariah Carey Shuts Down The Haters With Stunning Performances @ Macy’s 4th of July Firework Spectacular

After the fiasco at the BET Awards, Mariah Carey decided (once again) to prove that, sure, she might lip-sync and use pre-recorded backing tracks like they were going out of fashion, but that don't mean gurl can't still sing when she wants!

Taking to the stage at Macy’s 4th of July Firework Spectacular, Mimi gave great voice while serving up astonishing performances of Hero, #Beautiful and America The Beautiful. Looking confident and at ease on stage, her vocal was rich, thick and healthy- even when speaking. In fact, I'd go as far as to say this is the healthiest her live voice has sounded in years! Even her technique looked (I was keeping an eye on her mouth, throat and breathing) much improved!

Whatever you're doing Mariah, keep at it! Your voice is clearly benefiting from it!

[Watch] Mariah Carey Performs "#Beautiful" Remix @ 2013 Bet Awards

mariah carey 2013 bet music awards

If you were hyped about Mariah Carey's performance at the 2013 BET Awards, I'd advise you to modify your expectations now to avoid unnecessary disappointment. The vocals themselves- especially on that intro- were FIRE but it's a shame that Mariah was lip-syncing for her LIFE throughout! She did look gorgeous though, but I'm not sure how much more I can say about this considering it wasn't live.

[Video Spam] Watch New Music From Fatih Evans, India Arie, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey and Miley Cyrus!

We all know I'm pretty terrible at keeping on top of new releases and such- which is crazy considering I "run" a music blog. But I'm not sure if anyone else even caught the release of this new video from Faith Evans. Knowing my luck, it's an old song/video and Faith's team has only just posted it to her Vevo but since I've never heard it before, I'm posting it!

Dumb- no, I haven't resorted to name calling, that's the song's name- is an energetic, Motown-inspired romp, which pairs Faith's raspy and soulful voice with a quick tempo and playful sound to dizzying effect. Yep, the video is #BUUUUUUUDDGET but a quick wiki tells me why: the song isn't from a new album but from a compilation album, entitled R&B Divas, which was released last year. So I was kind of right and wrong about the song; it's old, but the video is new.

Still, I'm glad to have our first lady of Bad Boy back!

[Watch] Mariah Carey And Miguel Perform "#Beautiful" live @ Hot 97′s 2013 Summer Jam

Mariah, Mariah, Mariah.....good on you for promoting Beautiful, but yeah, this was not cute. I have no more words. You guys watch the Diva return the favour to Miguel for joining her at her GMA  mini-concert by crashing his Hot 97′s 2013 Summer Jam set. Then explain to me how I should be feeling in the comments. #Devastated, perhaps?

Update: Listened to it LOUDER- my poor neighbours- and Mariah wasn't as bad as I'd initially thought. Up until 2.42 she was actually pretty okay.

[Watch] Mariah Carey's Strangely Festive Car Crash Moment(s) During "Good Morning America" Mini-Concert

mariah carey GMA 2013

Erm, awkward! I don't know if I even want to get into Mariah Carey's Good Morning America mini-concert. But here goes:

From the moment she stepped onto the stage, you could see that all wasn't well with the usually pristine Carey- I mean, come on, when was the last time you saw her hair looking greasy?? Surviving a wardrobe malfunction, things really went downhill before new single #Beautiful, when Mariah inadvertently swore live on television. The choice of word was an ominous sign of things to come from the impending Miguel duet.

[Listen] Mariah Carey's Undubbed American Idol Medley Hits The Net! Yikes!

Mariah Carey singing At Idol

So our suspicions that Mariah Carey's Idol performance wasn't exactly as we were led to believe have kind of been confirmed with the surfacing of the video below. (Yes, I know, I was too chicken to say it in the post, but believe me when I say I spoke to a friend about it!)

Supposedly taken during the recording of the medley, the video clearly shows Mariah's belting range isn't quite as pristine as the rendition that aired on Idol wanted us to believe. It sounded particularly coarse and clumsy during the My All section of the medley.

However, it's still not clear whether the aired medley was a composite of the reported three takes; or if it was actually a cut and paste job of old/pre-recorded vocals. I suppose it would be less damaging if the they were all from the night- regardless of which take they happened in- but I guess we'll need to wait until (if?) the other renditions are released before we can really judge either way.

Mariah Carey Performs Medley @ American Idol

Mariah Carey singing At Idol

You better believe Mariah Carey was going to work that vast back catalogue of hers when she finally hit the American Idol stage to perform! With a vast chunk of the home audience probably being too young to remember Mariah's glory days in the 1990's, this was a smart move by the Diva to educate them (and any haters) as to just why she's deservedly sitting at the judges' table. The fact that it'll lift sales of her entire catalouge I'm sure had nothing to do with this decision(!)

[New Video] Mariah Carey & Miguel - "#Beautiful"

Okay..So..Yeah...on the positive side, I love #Beautiful even more now than when I reviewed it, here- I see some of you canny folk clocked on to the grade change * side-eyeing Mperry93*. But the accompanying video...I'm not sure I can deal with right now. I'm tempted to rip off some of the hilarious commentary occurring on the site chatbox and spin it as my own, but instead I'll leave the video here and let you guys deal with it in whatever way you see fit in the comments.....

[Review] Listen To Mariah Carey And Miguel Make "#Beautiful" Music Together...Sorry, I Couldn't Resist...I'm Lame.

Thank God for #Beautiful! I was starting to lose faith in Mariah Carey after Triumphant (Get Em) and Almost Home failed to illicit much, if any, of the love I usually feel for an MC release. For some of you who are not so hot on her, not liking two songs might not be a big deal. But for someone like me, who can listen to her back catalogue pretty much straight through, it was more than a little disconcerting to have two strikeouts (in a row, no less) after more than a decade of consistent home runs! It was pushing me to thinking I'd fallen off the Mariah bandwagon completely, but #Beautiful has given me faith a new in Mariah! Phew!

As good as #Beautiful is, it's not perfect. But let's start with the positives. It's great to hear Mariah tackle a new sound, and though still Rnb, like most of her hits, it definitely has a more indie infusion than the Pop or Hip-hop she usually dilutes the genre with. Excitingly, it gives the singer a freshness that she hasn't enjoyed in a long while, making her sound relevant and current. Hopefully it'll help the Diva generate  the buzz needed for a hit by appealing to- and surprising- critics and non-fans alike.

Of course Mariah's voice, though more nasal, sounds stunning. Adopting an earthier/rawer timbre, the singer refrains from excess ornamentation for much of the song, adhering to a concise melody that is sensitive to the retro feel and Miguel's vocal style. Sure, she does let loose towards the end of the song, but it's totally called for, and she still manages to sound restrained (by Mariah standards) and sympathetic to the laid back air of the track- this is despite some gloriously quick melisma. Ultimately, it's a slight change in style for Mariah, but it should appeal to the current music listener who - if the success of Adele, Taylor Swift and P!nk is anything to go by- seems to have grown tired of showy vocals.

[Review] American Idol Does Divas (Plus Theme: "Year They Were Born")

al 5 american idol 2013

Season 12 of American Idol has officially become a sausage free zone, with the remaining five contestants all being of the female persuasion - it's almost enough to make me watch! This being the case, or not (I don't know how far in advance they pick these themes), yesterday's episode was Divas night! In honour of that, each singer was asked to pick a song by a famous female to perform in front of the judges. But how many were heroic enough to pick a Mariah Carey or Nicki Minaj song? Find out below- along with my two pennies on each performance!

(I've also posted each of their second performances of the night, which were supposedly chosen from their year of birth. Might help those of us who don't watch the show get a better grasp on the contestants.)

[Watch] Kelly Clarkson Performs "People Like Us" @ American Idol And Mariah Carey Acknowledges Her Greatness!

MARIAH CAREY KELLY CLARKSON IDOL 2013

After our Kelly Clarkson love-in during yesterday's comments [here], it looks like our devotion was seen by the Gods and was justly rewarded with this live performance of People Like us @ American Idol. Yes. It was just for us, Devotees. Others will DEAL!

Performing the new single, Kelly gave us all kinds of life with her amazingly fluorescent  rendition of the call-to-arms anthem for freaks everywhere (including me)- this is despite claiming to have been nervous performing in front of Mariah Carey.

But it was after the rocking out when the magic really happened for me. That's when the world changed forever: Mariah actually got up from her seat- something I don't think I've seen her do this series of American Idol- and embraced the Idol alumni! EEEEK! Kelly being Kelly of course kept it super together, throwing in the word "crap"; telling Mariah to "shhh" at one point so she could ask Randy a question; talking about throwing-up; and then saying to Mariah, "I'm so glad you're not mean"! But we'd expect nothing less from our down-to-earth Texan! Seriously, can she be any more adorable?!

[Music Video] Mariah Carey "Almost Home"

mariah carey almost home oz

Mariah Carey is serving up "good face" in the video for her Oz: The Great & Powerful tie-in, Almost Home. Just like back in Kansas, Mariah's segments are shot entirely in black and white, with the Diva left to hold our attention with her expressive self and a chair...riveting stuff. ( see some of my favourite "moments" in Gif form below)

These scenes are contrasted nicely with inter-spliced clips from the actual movie, which are presented in glorious (techni?)colour. I'd really have loved to have seen some Carey in Oz moments, especially since this was the perfect excuse for her to embrace her "eternally 12" side, but it wasn't to be.

The video for Almost Home is clearly budget, but it's a simple and elegant movie tie-in that works well enough. The only real problem I have with it is Mariah's sexy poses and strange "Pow" moments, all which seem slightly inappropriate and out of place. I guess ain't nothing going to stop Mariah from doing Mariah. Not even a kid's film.....

Check out the visuals for Almost Home below, and let me know what you think in the comments.

[Review] Mariah Carey "Almost Home"

NEW MARIAH CAREY!!! ARGGHH, ALMOST HOME IS HERE!! (That's an exclamation of excitement, not pain. Just saying!)

Taken from the soundtrack to the film Oz the Great and Powerful, the Stargate produced track maintains Disney's vanilla sound, but sorta contemporises it with the use of synths and urban drum patterns. The effect is that Almost Home sounds like Mariah vocally, but doesn't quite ring true, musically. Perhaps something not so surprising considering the different requirements and pressures recording for a motion picture must bring.

News Spam: Mariah Carey, Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Grimes

Welcome to a spamming of Diva related news! Each story is too anaemic to deserve a single post, but important enough that I wanted to share and get your opinion on! Enjoy!

Mariah Carey:

OMG, Mariah Carey has a guest appearance in my favourite Seth Macfarlane cartoon, American Dad. (Take that Family Guy!) If I hadn't read about it over at MariahDailyJournal, I would have totally missed her.

In fact I had to watch the clip twice, even though I knew she was going to be in the scene, to figure out which character she actually was. The stupidity of which will become apparent when you see it only has one non cast member in it!

Talk about a crazy use of an A-list celebrity!

Me Oh My, Mariah!

I saw this photo yesterday- curtsey of Mariah Carey's Twitter- and was stunned! And even now, my brain can't seem to form any sort of coherent opinion on it... I'm not quite sure what is going on!  However, I just thought you guys should all see it too, and maybe help me to come to some sort of consensus on what I should be feeling!

However, not wanting to leave you just with a scantily clad Mariah, I thought I'd post the video of her ABC Nightline interview with Barbara Walters, where the Diva talks Nicki Minaj, American Idol, and her adorable family!

[Watch] Mariah Carey Plays In 2013 With Live Concert In Austrailia

What better way to start the new year with than some live Mariah Carey. Putting on a show for our Australian cousins, the Diva with the five-octave range helped to make the turn of the year one to remember for those lucky enough to have joined her at the sold out venue where she performed on Tuesday.

[Watch] Demi Lovato Covers Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas"

"All I Want For Christmas" is a Mariah Carey song, and thus, despite her making it sound as easy to sing as it is for me to overindulge during the festive season, it's actually not. Case in point, Ms Demi Lovato and her rendition of the song at the 31st Annual "Christmas In Washington" concert.

Having heard Demi sing live a number of times, I was actually looking forward to her take on this Holiday classic. She doesn't have the subtlest voice, being prone to, lets just say, "over projecting" at times, but I honestly thought this was a song she would handle well. However,I think Demi's nerves, and the resulting lack of control over her voice, got the better of her.

[Watch] Mariah Carey Performs Live At The Rockefeller Center

Mariah Carey's voice is back and ready for action if her set at last nights tree lighting ceremony at the Rockefeller Center is to believed! Selecting a track from each of her Christmas albums, the Diva- who is now judging others on their vocal skills- made sure she brought her A-game to event. This was 100% live people, and 100% amazing!

As much as I love All I want For Christmas, this wasn't the song I was most excited about hearing. But it shouldn't be ignored because she gave one of her best renditions of it in years. There was a little tension and rasp at the top of the belted notes, but everything else was flawless; with Mariah's head voice being in particularly good shape.

[New Music] Mariah Carey "Bring It On Home"

The first time we heard (a snippet of) Mariah Carey singing Bring It On Home, it was during an Obama fundraiser earlier this year. Well it's no surprise that the full song has now been released, the day after President Obama won his second term in the White House.
