Cheryl Cole "The Flood" : Video and Review

cheryl cole the flood
Cheryl Cole still taken from "The Flood"

Cheryl Cole is back with new single The Flood, a soppy, mid-tempo ballad about, you guessed it, Love (symbolised by the water) and its transient nature. All in all it's a pretty mediocre and forgettable follow up to her last single Promise This, but will no doubt go top 10 thanks to her X-factor profile.

Christina Aguilera on Connan and The 2010 American Music Awards

christina Aguilera fat 2010
In spite of gaining a little weight-  by Hollywood standards-and looking a little tired, Christina Aguilera is still out there promoting the release of her upcoming film Burlesque.

Firstly at the 2010 American Music Awards where she performed Express and more recently on Late Night With Conan O’Brien where she sang the jazzy, Something got a hold on me.Both Performances were a little sloppy and lacklustre, with her voice sounding darker and heavier than usual. However, there's no denying she still has amazing pipes.

Did Jessica Simpson rip off Mariah's "All I want for Christmas"?

Did Jessica Rip off Mariah?

Jessica Simpson has just released her first single from her new Christmas album "Happy Christmas" called "My only wish" and boy oh boy does it sound like Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas". It has the same lyrical content, the same melody and the same overall sound as Mariah's hit, with the only real change being the middle eight.

Nadine Coyle's New single "Put your hands up" is actually Good! Take a listen

put your hands up Review
Nadine Coyle "Put your Hands up"
Nadine Coyle's second single "Put your Hands up" is a definite improvement on her last, and pretty poor, flop "Insatiable".The song itself is an electro-pop, dance floor groove that is built around a muted trumpet sample.

Unfortunately this song suffers the same problem, but to a lessor extent, as her last release in that it sounds dated. Luckily for Nadine it sounds nowhere near as a dated as "Insatiable" and a strange attempt at autotuning  her voice part-way through may  be enough to make it appeal to the younger fanbase she desperately needs for this to sell well and become a hit.

"Put your Hands up" deserves to go top 10 at least, as its actually a  good ,grown-up, pop song. However, it's going to need a big push promotionally for people to take notice because it doesn't scream "hit" straight away or have a gimmick for people to latch on to ("Promise me", anyone?).

Listen to Kim Kardashian's terrible new song "Shake"

Kim Kardashian booty, nude
Kim Kardashian "Shake"
The guys over at Grapejuice have just premiered a new, Neptunes produced, song by Kim Kardashian called "Shake". Not blessed with the strongest voice Kim is quickly overwhelmed by the busy production.

Sounds like a hot mess to me but perhaps it needs a few more listens to sink in. Listen to it below.

Single Review: Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World) & lyrics

only girl in the world
Insipid lyrics, a terrible middle eight that harks back to one of Rihanna’s weaker singles, and an uninspired production could have killed Rihanna’s comeback but, boy oh boy is all forgiven when the euphoric chorus of Only Girl hits. The combination of the impassioned vocals with the 1990s rave inspired synths makes for a heady mix, that lifts this song from potential mediocrity to a club banger that is bound to be a world wide hit.

Rhianna’s voice melds perfectly with the song and is sounding better than ever as delivers strong, clear, weighty vocals, and long sustained notes (an a4 and c5) at the close of the song.

Only girl (in the world) builds the hype for her new album Loud brilliantly and puts to rest the fear that she would do a U-turn after the lukewarm reaction to her last album Rated R and go back to tried and tested RnB sound of Good girl gone bad.

OVERALL: Brilliant single, one of the best of 2010; bring on the new album!

Single Review: P!nk - Raise your glass

P!nk Raise Your Glass single cover Pictures, review
Raise your Glass cover
After touring for what seems like an eternity Pink's back with a new track called “Raise your glass” from her upcoming greatest hits album, “Greatest Hits...So Far!!!” which is released on the 15th of November 2010.

As with past albums the lead off track is an up-tempo, feel good, rockpop track designed to placate fans (who have been without new material) while simultaneously reminding the short term minded world that this feisty female is still about.

The song starts of well enough, with an interesting guitar chord progression and a bouncy vocal delivery but it quickly descends into mediocrity with the obligatory loud, shouty chorus. Even after a couple of listens I’m still no more inclined to raise my glass up, except maybe to throw it at the stereo, than I was before I listened to the song.

Raise your glass is basically Pink on autopilot, delivering to the world what she thinks the world thinks she does. However, since she’s been working so hard and so long wowing people on tour (me included), I am willing to let this clichéd, predictable and fairly pedestrian song slide.

 2.5/5
OVERALL: P!nk extra light ie shite.

Raise Your glass lyrics

Right right, turn off the lights,
We're gonna lose our minds tonight,
What's the deal, yo?

I love when it's all too much,
5am turn the radio up
Where's the rock and roll?

Party Crasher,
Penny Snatcher,
Call me up if you want gangsta
Don't be fancy, just get dancey
Why so serious?

So raise your glass if you are wrong,
In all the right ways,
All my underdogs,
We will never be never be anything but loud
And nitty gritty dirty little freaks
Won't you come on and come on and raise your glass,
Just come on and come on and raise your glass

Slam slam, oh hot damn
What part of party don't you understand,
Wish you'd just freak out (freak out already)
Can't stop, coming in hot,
I should be locked up right on the spot
It's so on right now (so fuckin on right now)

Party Crasher,
Penny Snatcher,
Call me up if you want gangsta
Don't be fancy, just get dancey
Why so serious?

So raise your glass if you are wrong,
In all the right ways,
All my underdogs,
We will never be never be anything but loud
And nitty gritty dirty little freaks
Won't you come on and come on and raise your glass,
Just come on and come on and raise your glass
Won't you come on and come on and raise your glass,
Just come on and come on and raise your glass

(oh shit my glass is empty, that sucks)

So if you're too school for cool,
And you're treated like a fool,
You can choose to let it go
We can always, we can always,
Party on our own

(so raise your) So raise your glass if you are wrong,
In all the right ways,
All my underdogs,
We will never be never be anything but loud
And nitty gritty, dirty little freaks
So raise your glass if you are wrong,
In all the right ways,
All my underdogs,
We will never be never be anything but loud
And nitty gritty, dirty little freaks
Won't you come on and come on and raise your glass,
Just come on and come on and raise your glass
Won't you come on and come on and raise your glass,(for me)
Just come on and come on and raise your glass (for me)

Review: Beyonce "Halo"

halo cover beyonce

Beyonce returns with a mid-tempo ballad from the Sasha Fierce album called Halo. Penned by the same persons who gave the world Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love, it follows in a similar style with the synths, strings and  prominent beat combo.

Halo has Beyonce taking a new vocal approach with a harsher timbre and a noticeable shift in less vibrato.I would have preferred softer vocals to contrast the harsh synths and drums but overall it's still a great song which I prefer way more to Beyonces' last sappy ballad If I Were A Boy.

4/5 OVERALL: More Sasha Fierce less Beyonce please

Dream feat Mariah: My Love - Review

mariah carey dreamMy Love sounds like any other Dream song, with its sparse, soulless, production. The lyrics have the Dream and Mariah Carey playing couple, and listing to the the world why their love is stronger than anything "the World can throw" at it. You know, typical 'us' vs 'them' type scenario.

Vocally the Dream and Mariah harmonise well, as both singers have a smooth, airy quality to their midrange voices.

Mariah is up to her usual tricks, blending her higher and lower vocals for her verse, but its nice to hear her lower range being utilized. Her vocals, overall, have a more relaxed and organic feel than I have heard before; almost as if shes not trying so hard to make this a technical performance.

Point in case is the scratchy texture Mariah's belts are graced with when shes sings the "know" in "they don't know" at 3.24. I, for one enjoy the rougher texture to Mariah's voice but I'm sure this will have people who like to bemoan about Mariah's changeable voice citing it as evidence of her vocal decline.

Hopefully an insight into Mariah and Dreams' songs for her new album that he has been refering to as 'MC3'.
3/5
OVERALL: Kinda average untill Mariah starts singing

Mariahs High Note from "My Love": E6-F6

Update: The album was actually released as The memoires of an Imperfect Angel (read the review here).
