New Alicia Keys- Speechless (FREE Download)

alicia keys eve speechless cover
Eve and Alicia Keys "Speechless"

Alica Keys is back with a late Christmas present in the form of a new song entitled Speechless. The song also features rapper Eve and is lifted from the upcoming Swizz Beatz release, Monster Mondays.

The song has an old school vibe and a simple, laid back feel  that Alicia mirrors with a breezy vocal delivery. It's also good to hear Eve back on the scene, reminding the world how rap can sound poetic and beautiful when its telling a story.

Visit the Monster Monday album site here, where you can get other free tracks from the album.

Alexandra Burke - The silence (Alan Titchmarsh performance)

alexander burke

Watching this made me realise that the extras on the stage during the X-Factor performance of The Silence actually did Alexandra Burke a disservice by distracting from that voice.

Fergie - Vocal Profile/ Range

Vocal Type: Contralto
Vocal Range:2 octaves and 4 notes. C#3- G#5
Vocal Pluses: A distinctive character that is present throughout the registers. Her midrange can be punchy, and full of attitude or soft and breathy. Versatile chest voice that can have a heavier rocky rasp to it when sung through the throat or a thinner, lighter more elastic tone when mixed with the head voice.
Vocal Negatives:Voice becomes harder to control the higher she belts, and the tone can become unstable.
Longest note:19 Seconds

Cheryl Cole, The Flood LIVE (Royal Variety Performance 2010)

Chery Cole gave her first live performance of her terrible single The Flood at the Royal Variety Show.

It's almost as if this was a different Cheryl Cole to the one we've watched on the X-Factor these last months. Gone was the tough, in-control aura and instead poor Cheryl looked nervous and meek, visibly shaking throughout the song. It's vulnerable side I've never seen in the confident Geordie before.

There's speculation about whether this was live or not, but I think the tuning issues and Cheryl being clearly nervous made it more likely to be live than not. The belted D5 note-that people are claiming was mimed- on the word "flood" (see 1.07) was also live; although that note is supported by a backing track that can be heard at 3.19.

[Vocal Profile] Ke$ha

Vocal Type: Mezzo Soprano
Vocal Range: 3 Octaves 1 note and a semitone (C#3-E6)
Whistle Register: No
Vocal Pluses: Ke$ha employs a talk/singing/rapping style for the most part of her music. The voice generally is used in its midrange and is characterful and able to effectively communicate the mood and tone of the lyrics. Her skill in manipulating her delivery allows for Ke$ha to project a variety of different emotions: from obnoxiously bratty [Hear:Blah Blah Blah]; to cool and relaxed [ Hear:VIP]; to soft and melancholy [Hear:Dancing With Tears In My Eyes]. However there is an identifiable marker of nasal placement that runs throughout the range, as well as a characteristic teenage petulance. It is possible for her to somewhat temper this, singing with a timbre that is contrastingly warmer, softer and airier [Hear:Blow (Deconstructed)], but it's not used often.

Ke$ha's belting range is surprisingly wide- starting at a B4 and extending up to an F#5, [Hear: Dirty Love]. The quality of the notes produced here are bright and piercing but thin and somewhat biting. The tone, timbre and texture of the notes is consistent right through from the lower belting range to the higher notes. An unusual feat when contrasted with most singers, who find their belted notes thinning and changing in quality the higher they sing. Still, Kesha doesn't sound to be carrying any tension in her voice, even up at the top, which suggests a good technique and the possibility that she can go above what has been shown. She is also able to sing for sustained periods in this part of her range without issue [Hear: Supernatural (Deconstructed) or the held F5 in Crazy Kids/ E5 in C'Mon ]

Vocal Negatives:Ke$ha's use of autotune has led many to question whether her ability to sing is pure fabrication, rather than due to a stylistic choice.

Watch Mariah Carey's video for "Old Lang Syne": Laughs a plenty!

mariah carey auld lang syne video
Mariah Carey in the video for Auld lang syne: seen the image, basically seen the video

Boy oh boy has the recession hit Mariah Carey hard if her current video is anything to go by. The video for Auld Lang Syne, from the Merry christmas ii you album, has got to be the cheapest video I have EVER seen from any singer, let alone an A-lister.

The video just has Mariah dancing- am i allowed to call it that?- in front of a green screen that has fireworks projected on to it while she mimes BADLY to the song. I think Mariah might have actually filmed this herself, maybe in her shed under the influence of all those pregnancy hormones, and released it online before anyone could stop her because the production values are next to nil. I especially love 2.45 when she twirls majestically onto the screen. Delightful.

Perhaps Mariah has just decided to inforce some austerity measures on her spending habits, she has got a baby on the way after all. Besides why should she still  spend huge amounts of money on her videos when it's not converting into sales for her.

2)O Little Town Of Bethlehem / Little Drummer Boy Medley
3)Oh holy night.

5)Charlie Brown Christmas
6)When Christmas Comes:
7)O Joy to the World
8)Christmas time is in the air again:
9)O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus

Mariah Carey's Christmas Special extravaganza aired on the ABC Network yesterday- much to my excitement- and contained material from both Merry Christmas ii you and Merry Christmas.

The show was clearly a high budget affair, with a stage that was decorated beautifully with trees, lights and plenty of glitter. The production also featured a live band, a strings section, a choir and occasional dancers, as well guest appearances from Randy Jackson and her mother, Patricia Carey.

Christina Aguilera and Cher: Burlesque soundtrack review

 burlesque christina Aguilera review
Christina Aguilera's CD art :Burlesque
I’m a little in love with Christina Aguilera at the moment. Not only has Bionic had resurgence in my affection, but Christina's- it’s actually a soundtrack which also features Cher- new release, Burlesque is pretty darn good. If you initially fell in love with Christina because of the Back to Basics album, you’ll fall in love with her all over again when you hear this.

Song run down

The Etta James song Something's Got a Hold On Mefits Christina voice perfectly as its a style of music that actually utilises and benefits from her grunts and growls, as well as its rough texture. Having all the tools already in her arsenal its not surprising she gives a convincing delivery that effortlessly channels Etta James' sass, passion and fire.

On the flip side the Mae West song Guy what takes his time, as well as But I Am a Good Girl, have Christina toning it all down. Instead, relying on her charm and a softer, sweeter voice to communicate the song. The result is two saucy and teasing tracks that scream Burlesque.

Cher- Vocal Profile/ Range [Contralto/ 3 Octaves]

Vocal Type: Contralto
Vocal Range: 3 octaves 2 notes and a semitone. C#3- F6
Vocal Pluses: Solid contralto voice, even in the higher octaves, with a dark, smoky tone,a soulful colouring and a range that is brilliantly connected.

Cher has the vocal stamina to hold notes for extended periods of time, with or without the use of her a natural and easy vibrato. A vibrato that is predominately quick, but capable of being modified to make wider if desired.

Cher's belting technique is great, being well supported and mixed effectively. This makes it not only easier for her to reach higher fifth octave notes but it helps retain the fullness that is present in her lower range.

For someone widely known for her low voice, Cher's head voice is surprisingly robust, being bright and clear, with a weight to it.

Vocal Negatives: The heaviness of the voice makes it difficult to be flexible in its ornamentation melodies.

Keri Hilson - Vocal Profile/ Range

keri hilson hot

Vocal Type: Soprano
Vocal Range: 3 octaves. C3- C6
Vocal Pluses: Sweet, soft agile voice.
Vocal Negatives:Lacks power and weight.

mariah carey Jump smokers remix album memoires

Remember Mariah Carey's last studio album Memoires Of an Imperfect Angel? Well if you do, you may not know that the album had two accompanying remix versions of it recorded that were cocked for release. However since the album barely managed to register a heart beat before it died an untimely death (NB: review), the remixed recordings were scrapped before a release date was set.

mary j and mariah carey
1_Memoires of an Imperfect Angel RnB Remix album:

An Rn B inspired take on the album was to feature different guest artists, such as Mary J Blige and R Kelly, duetting with Mariah on each song. Two of the remixes, Up out of my face featuring Nicki Minaj and the Angels Cry duet with Neo, managed to sneak out of the album before it was locked away but their failure at the charts pretty much guaranteed none of the other songs were to be released.

Not wanting to deprive the world, Mariah has said of the songs that she is looking into avenues of how to make these, eventually, available to the fans. She's even considering giving them away for free, which I think is highly unlikely. Anyone else smell a remix compilation album with all her other biggest remixed hits from yesteryear...oh wait!

[Vocal Profile] Patti LaBelle

Vocal Type: Dramatic Soprano
Vocal Range: 3 Octaves 3 notes and a semitone (Bb2-E6)
Whistle Register: No
Vocal Pluses: LaBelle is distinctly known for her explosive, powerful and incredibly emotive voice. Having started her long-standing career in vocal groups such as ‘Patti LaBelle and the Bluebells’ and ‘LaBelle’, this singer has built an excellent level of musicality in regards to harmonizing. A skill which has served her well, even once a solo star, thanks to her fondness for duetting and collaborating with others. A notable pairings was that which occurred with Cyndi Lauper when they sang Time after Time. Here, LaBelle showcased her skill to fuse her own vocals with another's in a way that was both complimentary and sympathetic to her duetting partner's own voice. Considering the natural power that lies behind LaBelle's instrument it shows the great skill, control and restraint she has as a singer.

The lower extremities (Bb2 – E3) can sound somewhat less projected in comparison to the upper range, with this area tending to sound dry and distended. However due to her impeccable technique the notes sound healthy and well placed, if not entirely full. As the voice ascends towards the mid-range it quickly thickens connecting the voice to the mid-range.

In the mid-range LaBelle’s voice becomes somewhat fuller, more dynamic and takes on a notable and distinctive sound. This part of the voice is entirely unique to LaBelle in that not only is the voice full and powerful enough to cut through an orchestra, but it is typically deeper and more fulsome when compared to other sopranos. However due to LaBelle's excellent artistry she can alter the sound to best fit the material she is singing, for example on Oh People LaBelle displays a softer more nuanced edge to her voice in comparison to her Two Steps Away tribute where this section is more full, pronounced and direct.

The head voice and upper range is where LaBelle displays her skills as a vocal behemoth. This area, including the belting range, is incredibly powerful , full and elastic. Again displayed in her ‘Two Steps Away’ tribute, LaBelle shows an uncanny ability to flip straight up into high octave belts, all the whilst adopting an impressive technique that allows her to hold high notes with great ease.

The rare ability to project a full-sounding belt, right up to the soprano C6 is an incredibly impressive feat, and LaBelle has consistently shown able to do so with apparent ease. This upper-register extends right up to E6, which is marked with a dramatic, rounded and potent sound.

Overall, LaBelle is an exceptionally adept technician who has honed her skills via decades of experience in the industry. With exceptional control over every aspect of her voice- including its dynamics, tone, timbre and phrasing- she wields it with freedom and an instinctive edge. Able to hold notes, jump threw registers, use interesting and complex melisma, and perform vocal tricks (like octave-spanning glissando), it is little wonder that Patti is revered amongst singers and non-singers alike. It's also due to her technique that she has maintained much of her voice as she has aged, including her ability to heavily load belts in the upper regions. Though there has been a slight deterioration in power, she still remains a vocal force to be reckoned with.

Vocal Negatives:The nature of LaBelle’s powerful upper octave belts can be somewhat off putting to some, for example her performance of the Star-Spangled Banner displays her attacking style that can be a tad overbearing. Also the characteristics of the voice as a whole can be an acquired taste, particularly in the mid-range.

Review: Rebecca Furguson and Christina Aguilera perform Beautiful (X-Factor Final 2010)

christina aguilera rebecca x-factor
Rebecca and christina Aguierla at the x-factor semi Final

Christina and Rebecca xfactor final
A hefty Christina Aguilera took to the X-factor stage and totally smashed it with her performance of Beautiful. Unfortunately, the same could not be said of her duetting partner Rebecca, who gave a shaky vocal performance and forgot the lines.

To add to the list of complaints was the song arrangement. The choice to cut off the song at the climatic second half, when the true belting begins, was ludicrous. It may have been done to spare Rebecca's blushes but it only served to disappoint those who were waiting for the vocal fireworks to begin.

The performance was a ramshackle affair that made the usually slick show look like an amateur production. This was a duet that could have been something special, but instead it was a badly paired, rushed and unrehearsed mess that potentially sacrificed Rebecca's chances of winning for the viewers and publicity Christina would bring to show.

Rihanna took to the stage this weekend to duet with X-factor finalist Matt Cardle on her song Unfaithful. It was a shaky performance from Matt, and as I feared, he seemed totally uncomfortable with the song choice and the setting. Rihanna on the other hand looked in her element, and despite the terrible hair, managed to stay vocally on point while trying her best to create some chemistry with Matt. Bad Pairing. Nuff said.

Madonna "Express yourself"

This is why we love Madonna. Empowering message, cutting edge music and visuals, all delivered with a feisty attitude.

I remember how exciting, fresh and different Express yourself was to anything else I'd heard at the time. Definitely still one of my favourite Madonna songs.

Disaster! Kylie Minogue releases "Better than Today". (Review and Video)

Kylie Minogue Better that today
cover.
From an album full of potential hits someone really dropped the ball in selecting Better than today as Kylie Minogue's next single.

It suffers from a flat, cheap sounding production and an annoying motif in the backing track that is so obviously a desperate attempt to make the song catchy it's painful.

But what do I know? According to wiki, critics love it, with the Kings of impartiality the BBC apparently calling the song a "tech-country strut" that "throws up imagery of line-dancing cyborgs". Whatever that means.

But what frustrates me most about the choice of Better Than Today as a single is that it's delaying the release of the brilliant, stand out title track, Aphrodite. Please PLEASE release it next Kylie, the world need Aphrodite more now than ever!

Jennifer Lopez's new cover for upcoming album entitled Love

j lo love album
Album cover for Love by Jennifer Lopez

Background Info about the forthcoming Love album is taken from Jennifer lopez's Wiki Page
From her 2007 pregnancy Lopez had been writing her then-confirmed seventh studio album, Love? due for release in Summer 2010. It features productions from Danja, Jim Jonsin, Darkchild, Chris n Teeb (from Dropzone), Tricky Stewart, The-Dream, D'Mile Mike Caren, Jean Baptiste and The Neptunes. A song titled "Fresh Out The Oven" featuring Miami rapper Pitbull surfaced online in October 2009 but her record label said that it was simply a buzz single. It has since topped the Hot Dance Club Songs chart. The project's official lead single, "Louboutins", had its radio debut on November 23, 2009, following the song's premiere and performance at the 2009 American Music Awards. The song only managed to enter the Hot Dance Club Play chart six weeks after release and reaching number 1, however, it failed to enter any other chart, including the Billboard Hot 100. In late February 2010, it was confirmed that Lopez and Epic Records have parted ways.

Lopez's manager, Benny Medina confirmed the news saying "Jennifer had a wonderful relationship with the Sony Music Group, and they have shared many successes together, but the time was right to make a change that best serves the direction of her career as an actress and recording artist, she is grateful and appreciative to everyone at Sony for all that they accomplished together."Lopez later released a statement to the media where she said that she had already completed her contractual obligations with Sony Music Entertainment and Epic Records and decided it was for the best to end the partnership on amicable terms. She added that she found a new "home" [record label] for the album 'Love?' and it will be coming out Summer 2010. Shortly after being spotted talking to Island Def Jam Music Group's chairman and CEO L.A. Reid, it was confirmed on March 19, 2010 that Lopez signed with Def Jam Recordings, and is working on new material for Love? with RedZone Entertainment (Kuk Harrell, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart).

Taylor Swift Can't sing live...

mary j blige and taylor swift
Should Taylor Swift be taking vocal lessons from Mary J Blige

Taylor Swift is an odity in todays music market. Despite not having a large presence on the Billboard singles chart, this lady  still manages to shift vast quanities of her album.

Being as big a seller as Taylor is she has attracted a fare share of haters, and what with her being a solid songwriter, critically acclaimed, and easy on the eye, the haters have aimed their vitriol at her apparent inability to sing live. To judge if this assertion is true, I turned super-sleuth and conducted a Youtube search using the words "Mine"-which is Taylor's latest single- and "live". (The video I chose is posted below)

Can she sing live? well judging by this performance the answer is yes. She may have had some dud performances previously, because there's usually no smoke without fire, but this video shows, without a doubt, she does have the ability to perform  and sing  live. Watch the album version and the live version below and judge for yourself.

Celine Dion and her Twin boys on the cover of Hello

Congratulations to Celine Dion who has revealed the two new additions to her family on the cover of the Canadian version of Hello magazine. The non identical twin boys named Nelson- after Nelson Madella- and Eddy-after her lyricist Eddy Marnay- are extra precious to Celine due to the difficulty she experienced conceiving and carrying them:

'We tried five times before I got pregnant. On the sixth try, it worked out. We were blessed twice.

'It's extraordinary to be parents again. Nelson and Eddy are doing well. They're six weeks old.'

She also told how she was originally pregnant with three babies, but lost one during the pregnancy.

'One little baby decided to step back to help the other two survive. The doctors said to me if there's something wrong, natures takes it's course.

'I still think of the one who stepped back. I'm sure every woman has the feeling about the little one that's not there.'

Congratulations again to the singer and her family!

Review of When Christmas comes:
When Christmas Comes is the new single from Mariah Carey's seasonal offering, Merry Christmas ii You. The song is a mid-tempo, retro affair, that has been refreshingly composed entirely with live instrumentation. All these things, and of course The Voice, make When Christmas comes a rarity in contemporary seasonal songs in that its clearly been created  not to cash in on the holiday season, but to celebrate it.

Currently Listening to: Ellie Goulding- Little Dreams

Ellie goulding little dreams
Little Dreams taken from the
 album Bright Lights
Singer Ellie Goulding was chosen as the worthy winner of the BBC's  sound of 2010. For all who are unaware of the accolade, its essentially an annual prediction, made by people in the know, of which artist  is going to be successful in the coming year. Previous winners include Adele in 2008 and Little Boots in 2009.

The public got to judge for themselves if the praise was warranted when Ellie's début album Lights reached the shops in March of 2010. Personally I was suitably impressed and found the album to be an exciting and successful combination of Ellie's Soft, folksy sensibilities and the producer's hard, edgy electro/pop sound. Definitely a worthy winner of the sound of 2010.

The Ellie Goulding song currently under heavy rotation on my MP3 player is Little Dreams and its taken from the aptly named Lights reissue, Bright LightsI felt an affinity for Little Dreams on the first listen as it reminded me of the majestic Kate Bushs' classic Running up that Hill.  Both songs share a rhythmic, rolling beat at their heart and both conjure up a dream like scene with their melody and lyrics. Whether you agree with the comparison or not,  you have to agree this song is  a winner!

Christina Aguilera performs "Lift me up" live at the Hope for Haiti benefit.

Christina Aguilera gave a stand out vocal performance at the Hope for Haiti concert when she sung a stripped down version of ballad Lift me up from her Bionic album.

What I loved most about this performance was that Christina actually stuck to her natural tessitura (range). The result was a sublime performance that cut out the pushed and strained vocals she's has become synonymous with and instead gave us a chance to enjoy and appreicate the colour, texture and beauty of the voice.

Michelle Williams- Vocal Profile/ Range

Vocal Negatives: Voice becomes thinned and nasal as she ascends her chest register.

Kelly rowland- Vocal Profile/ Range

Vocal Type: Mezzo-Soprano
Vocal Range:3 octaves  C3- C6
Vocal Pluses: Her voice really shines in its strong, weighty midrange belt that can be made to sound even more impressive with the application of her vibrato. She is also able to execute complex vocal runs.
Vocal Negatives: Weaker low range that is reached via bad technique. The upper extremities of the chest register can sometimes sound harsh,  rough and unpolished.

How to sing Low notes

Singing low notes requires relaxation. Your body needs to be relaxed, your vocal cords need to be relaxed, the muscles that control your cords need to be relaxed. See more of this article here at http://www.aussievocalcoach.com/2010/07/13/how-to-sing-impressive-low-notes/

Nicki Minaj - Vocal Profile/ Range

Vocal Type: Soubrette
Whistle Register: No
Vocal Range: 2 octaves, 4 notes  D3- Bb5
Vocal Strengths: Although classed as a rapper, has demonstrated the ability to carry a melody aptly. Her voice is full of character and energy: able to switch between a thick and heavy timbre to a light and bright one quickly providing brilliant contrast. Her midrange is solid and her chest is capable of hitting the fifth octave.
Vocal Weaknesses: Her chest voice is thin and becomes weaker very quickly as it gets higher.

Nicole Scherzinger - Poison Official video

Nicole Scherzinger - Poison
I initially really disliked Nicole Scherzinger's new song Posion due to it  sounding like a weak, mess of noise to me. But today, for no reason, I succumbed to a craving for the song and since then, like some kind of fungus, its taken root in my mind and now I actually quite like it.

Maybe I've finally succumbed to Nicole's poision (shock!)! oh and props to her for keeping fully clothed  in the superhero inspired video.

WIki desciption:
"Poison" is an up-tempo synthpop and dance-pop song produced by RedOne. The "guitar-driven" number uses a "pulsating" and "toxic" beat throughout, which is similar to that used in the Britney Spears's song "Toxic". The lyrics were also compared to "Toxic" and said to have similar themes, according to BBC Music blogger, Fraser McAlpine.

Nicole Scherzingers' first attempt at solo success

Nicole Scherzinger:  whatever u like
video still

Nicole Scherzinger, is currently having a stab at solo success with the release of her new single "Poison" (see her performance of the song here on the X-Factor). However, What many people don't know is that this isn't her first attempt at launching a solo career post the Pussy Cat Dolls.

That came in 2007 when Nicole released the grimy, sexually suggestive, single Whatever U like featuring T.I. Despite it being very of of the moment at the time song- think of it as a mash up of Beyonce's Ring the Alarm and Kelis' Bossy-  it didn't connect with the listeners and quickly tanked.  Surmising the public didn't like "sexy" Nicole, record execs scrambled to save the project by toning down Nicole sauciness and releasing the non-threatening, and terrible, follow up, Baby love. Unfortunately for Nicole this single also flopped and as a result of the combined failure the album "Her name is Nicole" was shelved and never released.

Here's hopping its second time luck for Nicole Scherzinger and her solo career.

Alexandra Burke- The Silence X-Factor performance 2010 review

Alexandra Burke performing The
Silence on the X-factor 2010
Alexandra Burke walked out again onto that hallowed X-factor stage where just two years ago her life was transformed by winning the show. Now a successful solo star in her own right she proved she still had the X-factor by  giving a rousing performance of her single The Silence.

Simply stunning : Adele "Someone like You"

Stacey Solomon: I'm a celebrity get me out of here 2010 Winner!

Stacey And her Boyfriend after winning I'm a celebrity get me out of here

Stacey Solomon on the x-factor last year

Stacey Solomon was a runner up on last years X-Factor and despite actually having a good voice and "the likeability factor", the buggers never picked her up for a record contract after the show ended.

This year Stacy found herself on the masochist's favourite television program, I'm a Celebrity get me out of here. A prime-time show, ironically shown directly after the X-factor, that has "celebrities" doing gross tasks to earn food stamps to essentially live.

Unsurprisingly-because she's awesome- Stacey easily won the show and took home the title of Queen of the Jungle. Hopefully winning the show will open the doors for her that the X-factor failed to last year.

So to show my support and offer congratulations, to  possibly the nicest person in the world, here are two of her best X-factor performances.

First step, Queen of the Jungle, next, Queen of  ENGLAND!
