[Review] Diva's Halloween Costume Extravaganza

Yesterday was that special time of year where one could go out dressed like whatever the F***k one wanted, and not get committed or sectioned for their efforts. Yes people, yesterday was Halloween! How spooky!

Now if you're a misery guts like me (see the gifs below to get  a sense of where I'm coming from) you would have done zilch to mark the occasion. Well that's not strictly true, I sat in watching Adams Family and Polyester (Don't ask). I was planning on changing the banner of the site to somehow mark the day, but even that proved too much for my lazy behind.

But our Divas are a more exuberant and festive bunch than yours truly, and they didn't let us down; getting into the unholy spirit in the way only rich people with too much free time on their hands can. So let's check out what our lovely ladies were serving up on the catwalk of Halloween 2012!

[Watch] Nicki Minaj Attacks Mariah Carey During American Idol Auditions

OMG. I'd read about the supposed fight between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey during the American Idol Auditions but straightaway brushed it off as a publicity stunt. That was until I saw the footage.

If Nicki is acting here then get that girl an Oscar, because to me it looks like she is clearly annoyed and off on a rant. According to TMZ the argument got so out of hand that it ended with Ms Manaj telling Mariah, “I’m gonna knock you out”.

I'm hoping that this clip has been released totally out of context, because if it hasn't, Nicki Minaj is going to suffer from it going public. It totally contradicts the sweet and accessible image that has allowed her to cross over into the mainstream.

Mariah Carey finally seems to be getting some recognition from the music industry she has pretty much been on top of for over two decades- we won't mention the "G" word.

Last year Mariah was honoured by BET, where Patti Labelle and Kelly Rowland paid tribute to the 5-octave singer with their performances of Hero and Fantasy [See here]. This year it was the turn of the BMI Urban Awards to celebrate Mariah Carey and her skill as a lyricist.

You guys asked for it, so here it is: Mariah Carey freestyling with the house Jazz band in a New York bar! Shot on the same day as her (not so great) set at the NFL Kickoff [read about it/watch it here], the songbird showed that, when in her vocal comfort zone, she can still deliver the goods.

Mariah Carey gave her first EVER live performance of new single Triumphant (Get Em) at the opening of the NFL Kickoff and delivered anything BUT the performance that was needed to revive the song's efforts on the charts.

Anyone who likes Mariah Carey for her whistle register will love this, and consider this performance a success; but anyone who loves Mariah for her strong belting, her (usually) uncanny pitch control, her gorgeous tone, and her overall Godliness when it comes to "the voice" will be EXTREMELY disappointed.

Having been left decidedly unimpressed by Mariah Carey's latest single, Triumphant (Get 'Em), I've taken to delving into the Diva's back catalogue to get my Carey fix- well, at least until the next song drops. It was during this musical excursion that I happened to rediscover I Feel It, and thought I'd share it.

How does Mariah Carey do "Triumphant" in the new video for the soon to be labelled "buzz-track" of the same name? Well, the same way she does everything else: posing, pouting and trying as hard as she can to be sexy.

Just like the song itself [review here], Mariah Carey isn't even the main attraction of the video- that privilege goes to the boxers and the boxing match itself. Instead, she's relegated to the babe holding the numbered cards between bouts. Not that she seems to have a problem with it; clearly enjoying parading herself and her new slimline figure for the crowd. Or maybe I've interpreted it all wrong and this is really a visual representation of Mariah Carey's own triumph with her weight? (Why does that sound so bitchy when I read it back?)

Now if there is any Diva out there that I would "Stan" for, it would be Mariah Carey. But let's get this straight, I don't Stan for anybody, because in the end it doesn't help anyone: not the star, not the fan and least of all someone who is trying to critique music as objectively as possible. You might wonder why I'm adding this rambling disclaimer-of-sorts to the start of the review, but I feel I need to, because what I'm about to write I can't even believe is true, but here goes: Mariah Carey's new single, Triumphant (get em), is a total disappointment.

News Spam: Joss Stone, Mariah Carey and Madonna

I was a little miffed when during the talks about who would sit on The Voice (UK) judging panel, that there was no mention of one of Britain's best young singers, Joss Stone. Well though there was no mention of her name, it turns out that the singer was in fact asked, and guess what, she turned it down! Her reason:

"The thing is I love music and I love singing with other people and I don't see it as a competition at all. I feel that those things are really good to get exposure but they kind of make it into a competition and that is just sad.

"Other than that it is great because they get to be heard by millions and they never would have been before."

I know her fans will say that she's always been nice, but I've watched enough of her interviews to know that this is one shady lady who gives interviews though usually super (artificially) sweet, are more than often dripping with grade-A arsenic.

Mariah Carey Confirms Place On American Idol Judging Panel

Mariah Carey has confirmed her place on the upcoming series of American Idol judging panel via Twitter.Yay!!

Who am I kidding, I really, REALLY didn't want her to take up that seat, but as she's confirmed it, I'll try looking at the bright side of her choice below.

There are a number of good things that could come out of her place on the panel: the biggest being the massive promotion she will receive just by sitting at that table. But more important than the promotional side- because I think her next album would have been a hit without the aid of Idol- is the chance that Mariah Carey has to rework her joke of a public image.

With the current line-up of judges on American Idol falling faster than the chances of me magically receiving tickets for the opening ceremony of the Olympics, it looks like an unlikely candidate has stepped up to the mark and stated their desire to claim one of the coveted (now empty) seats. The title pretty much says it all! Mariah Carey was performing in Monaco and had just finished singing Hero, the closing song on her setlist, when out of nowhere an "eager" fan jumps onto the stage and charges at the singer!

Sounding in better form, vocally, than her last live set in Austria [here], Mariah Carey  graced the Mawazine Festival in Morocco with her presence and hefty back catalogue in a one off concert for the Moroccan people. 

Below are the performances, as well as my views on them. I'd love to hear what you guys thought in the comments!

NOTE: Anyone who suffers from sea sickness might prefer to listen to the audio, oppose to watching the clips. The camera does get pretty vomit inducing with a constant "swaying" motion when its panned out from the stage. You have been warned!!

Already in Europe celebrating her Wedding anniversary, it was a short trip for Mariah Carey to make to get over to Ischgl, Austria, to perform at the Top of the Mountain concert to mark the closing of the ski season. Am I the only one slightly disheartened by the photos of Mariah Carey back in the studio with Jermaine Dupri? Yes, any new music from the star is a blessing- I’m am literally palpitating at the thought of it- but I feel since the stellar success of We Belong Together,  the pair have been stuck chasing past glories with song after song of similar sounding material:

Funny, down to earth, kinda goofy and awkward, but with a voice that can crumble mountains.We fell in love with the gutsy singer on season one of American Idol back in 2002, and since then not only has she managed to maintain grounded and normal, but has also held on to a successful music career- unlike fellow season one runners up Nikki McKibbin and Justin Guarini, (remember them? I sure don't). As if to mark her decade in the music industry the singer just scored her latest Billboard number one with single Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You).

Here's to another decade of success!

Mariah Carey's First Live Performance of 2012:"Shake It Off"

Mariah Carey hit the stage for her first live performance since the birth of "Dem Babies"- yes, I'm purposely ignoring the T-Mobile "holographic" performance from November of last year. Part of an eight song set for Jimmy Kimmel‘s "Plot Your Escape", the performance of Shake It Off was nabbed from Ustream by a Youtuber- Facebook and MSN noises included. The full set airs tomorrow [Saturday, March 3rd] on US television.
